Accommodation
Ambae Vanuatu Bungalows
Ambae has the distinction of being the inspiration for James Mitchener's mysterious island of Bali Ha'i in his famous book "Tales of the South Pacific". Mitchener was stationed at a naval base on Espiritu Santo and could see the misty volcanic island of Ambae (also spelled Aoba) in the early morning.
Ambae is a volcanic island with two lakes occupying the twin volcanic craters - one blue, one yellow, one cool, one hot. The terrain is rugged covered with jungle. There are pathways everywhere but the roads are in poor condition so it is difficult to get around.
Accommodation in Ambae is in village style bungalows. Typically these have a small restaurant operated by the bungalow owner with local foods. Visitors should consider bringing their own beverages and some extra tea, coffee, and sugar that can be left behind as a small gift.
You can't book these bungalows through an agent, you have to call them yourself or simply show up. You will pay the bungalow or guest house owner directly in Vatu.
Air Vanuatu Tours will book your air tickets and provide the latest advice on the condition and probable occupancy of the village bungalows. Contact David Dick at Air Vanuatu Tours.
