Coconut Palms Resort Port Vila, Budget Vanuatu Hotel
Coconut Palms Resort is a complete renovation and expansion of a hotel complex that was one of Port Vila's better known "budget" hotels. It is hardly recognizable as the same place. Coconut Palms is close to the Port Vila hospital and many of the visiting doctors and nurses stay here (there is a constant stream of volunteer medical groups that come to Vanuatu to assist with everything from eye surgery to heart surgery). Coconut palms has budget priced dormitory rooms, budget price fan cooled rooms, low cost air conditioned rooms and a recent block of apartments with kitchen facilities. You can dine in the restaurant (the chef won the "best chef of the year" award) or by the pool. There is a bar, DVD and TV lounge with satellite TV, Internet Café, comfortable lounge, and even a BBQ area complete with a fountain in the gardens. Coconut Palms Resort was first named The Wild Pig Hotel reflecting the ideas of the young men who were the first managers of the renovated hotel. The nightclub had live music and was sometimes a bit on the overpowering side. A new manager from Scandanavia re-named the hotel Coconut Palms Resort and began a series of major renovations and improvements to orient the hotel more towards a budget priced accommodation that would appeal to any budget minded traveller. The live music night club was first going to be relocated further from the rooms, then it was dropped. Within a year there was a new manager, possibly because the cost of renovations was greatly exceeding the earnings and moving the facility out of the "budget" range. The new manager is a prize, a ni-Vanuatu man with extensive experience in the hospitality industry of Port Vila with a delightful ability to combine budget-control and customer satisfaction. He's energetic and concerned about the guests.
