Iririki Island Resort Port Vila Vanuatu
Iririki Island Resort sits on a little private island in the middle of Port Vila Harbour. It's one of Vanuatu's oldest and best known resorts and has recently been completely renovated. A free ferry commutes constantly between Port Vila and the island. The channel is only a few hundred meters wide and always calm. The channel is, in fact, an anchorage for international cruising yachts from around the world. Iririki Island Resort does not allow children under 12 years old - but Snorkelers Cove Resort (same island, same owners) has no age restrictions. There are three room styles, waterfront bungalows (seen above), then behind and above these is a row of harbour view bungalows (with a glimpse of the harbour through the gardens and trees) and behind and above these are garden view bungalows - the most economical accommodation on the island. All the bungalows have both air conditioning and ceiling fans. Right in the middle of the rows of bungalows is the resort's famous Mitchener Restaurant, swimming pool, spa and bar. On the southern end of the bungalows is a white sand beach and water sports centre with sailing catamarans, kayaks, snorkel gear, and even a seaplane for sight-seeing flights around Port Vila. Iririki Island Resort organizes all kinds of activities for the guests, including tours to any of Efate's attractions, cocktail parties, weddings, Melanesian nights with custom dancing, and birthday cakes. Electric golf-cart style transport is provided free of charge and goes around the island to Snorkellers Cove and to the huge cascading swimming pool complex, complete with gymnasium, snack bar, tennis courts, and game room. If you decide to stay at Iririki Island Resort you'll enjoy it. The staff manages to be professional without the slightest trace of being stuffy. I remember eating at the Watermark Restaurant one evening, watching a young ni-Vanuatu waitress open a bottle of wine and expertly pour it into wine glasses for a young couple. The two love-birds were totally absorbed in each other's eyes (probably honeymooners) and didn't even notice the waitress. The waitress had a big grin on her face and was truly happy to be there, pouring the wine into those wine glasses for the young couple. The glowing smile had an element of pride - and I realized the waitress was happy and proud to be serving the lovers their wine. A small event, but it says a lot about the people who will look after you if you stay at Iririki Island Resort.
